3 phase surge protector designed for 3 phase AC power systems

3 Phase Power

3 phase power is commonly used for AC power generation and transmission. It is the most common transmission method in the global distribution network.
Compared with single-phase electricity, 3 phase power is more efficient and only requires one more wire in terms of cost.

Characteristics of 3 phase power:

  1. Use three independent AC voltages with the same frequency but 120 degrees phase difference.
  2. Can easily increase the voltage for transmission through a transformer, and then reduce the voltage for distribution.
  3. Mainly used to directly power large motors, heavy loads and industrial equipment.
  4. Can be divided into single-phase power supply for small loads such as residential.
  5. Provide nearly constant power transmission for linear loads.
  6. Can generate a rotating magnetic field to drive the motor.
  7. It is more efficient than single-phase power transmission.

3 Phase Surge Protector

3 phase SPDs are surge protectors designed for 3 phase AC power systems. Installing type 1 and type 2 SPDs in different locations using standard methods protects against overvoltages from lightning and switching, improving system reliability and safety.

In 3 phase power systems, use Thor’s type 2 or type 1 three-phase SPDs:

– Install type 2 SPDs (e.g. TRS4 series) in distribution boxes near equipment to prevent switching and indirect lightning surges.

– Install type 1 SPDs (e.g. B+C series) at the main power input to prevent direct lightning current pulses.

These SPDs can be selected and installed according to the specific 3 phase power supply system configuration, such as TN-S, TN-C, TT, or IT systems.

Thor’s AC surge protectors have the following features, making them suitable for use in 3 phase power supply systems:

1. Fast thermal response and cut-off provide quick, reliable protection for different power systems

2. Safely discharges current with an 8/20 μs waveform

3. Includes built-in fault indicators and optional remote monitoring

4. Offers impulse current capacities of 10kA, 20kA, 40kA, and 60kA

5. Protects any power system with single-phase or three-phase options and different voltages

Thor offers flexible SPD solutions for different power systems, including 3 phase, to reliably protect equipment. A standard three phase protection setup is:

1. Install a type 1 SPD (like B+C) at the main power input for primary protection.

2. Install type 2 SPDs (like TRS4) at key distribution points for secondary protection.

3. For critical equipment, add a type 2 SPD at its power input for extra defense.
