The difference between lightning protection module and lightning protection box

With the advancement and development of the power system and the advent of the digital and AI era, the shapes and functions of buildings have become increasingly diversified and improved. Buildings with different functions and supporting power systems also present a diversified layout. For example: photovoltaic energy storage building facilities, computer database rooms, information and communication network rooms, etc. all require lightning protection facilities for supporting power and communication systems. Therefore, whether it is necessary to install lightning protection modular products or choose lightning protection boxes in the power system must be analyzed based on the actual situation. Let’s give a simple answer to the specific differences between lightning protection modules and lightning protection boxes.

What is a lightning protection module?

The lightning protection module is a commonly used protection device in the power supply system. The lightning protection module is the core component of the surge protector. It is stuck on the matching base and combined to form a surge protector. The surge protector base is usually installed on a 35mm rail. When struck by lightning, the lightning protection module will introduce a large instantaneous current into the ground and release it to ensure the safety of electrical equipment. When the lightning protection module fails, it is replaceable. It can be pulled out from the matching base and replaced with a new lightning protection module. Thor’s surge protector The TRS series, TSR2 series, TRS3 series (photovoltaic surge protector), TRS4 series, and TRS5 series are all surge protectors that can replace lightning protection modules. When selecting a lightning protection module, you should match it with a suitable surge protector based on the actual conditions of the power system.

what is Lightning protection box?

The most common one is the power supply lightning protection box. The power supply lightning protection boxes mainly include sealed power supply lightning protection boxes, door-type power supply lightning protection boxes, explosion-proof power supply lightning protection boxes, distribution power supply lightning protection boxes, etc., which can be divided according to the use environment. For: outdoor power supply lightning protection box and indoor power supply lightning protection box. According to the connection method, it can be divided into: series type and parallel type. The lightning protection box module is composed of a voltage switching module and a voltage limiting module (or integrated MOV). It is mainly installed in power distribution rooms, distribution cabinets, AC power distribution panels, switch boxes and other important equipment, as well as at the power incoming lines of equipment prone to lightning strikes, to protect equipment from damage caused by lightning overvoltage intruding along the power lines.

How to choose lightning protection modules and lightning protection boxes?

The functions of lightning protection modules and lightning protection boxes are the same, the difference lies in the installation.

At present, newly built buildings and supporting power distribution systems have improved lightning protection facilities, and surge protectors have been installed in power distribution cabinets, so it is more suitable to install modular surge protectors.

If it is required to be installed outdoors, ordinary lightning protection modules are not waterproof and require a box to protect the surge protector, so it is more suitable to install a lightning protection box. If you choose to install a lightning protection box outdoors, some lightning protection boxes have an automatic alarm device that will send out a signal in time when struck by lightning. If there is no space to install a lightning protection module in the distribution cabinet, it is more suitable to install a lightning protection box outside the distribution cabinet. If there is no lightning protector installed in the old power distribution system, it is more suitable to install a lightning protection box. The fireproof performance of the lightning protection box is better, which is especially important for unattended base stations. Some outdoor box displays and lightning protection equipment for outdoor facilities are also more suitable for lightning protection boxes.
